Holiday helpers

In Publishers Weekly’s holiday spot check of independent booksellers, business is “a little bit behind last year” at Skylight Books in Los Angeles, but “people seem to be generally upbeat,” says general manager Kerry Slattery. “Some people are buying things now, and others are scouting around for what they want to get later.” Slattery added that the grocery store strike in California has had a “strange effect” on book sales: “One of our customers bought $150 worth of children’s books to donate for the children of the strikers. When I told another customer about that, they did the same thing.” [via PW, subscription required]
