This weekend

Long Beach is reading… The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell and her former students at Wilson High School. The Long Beach Public Library kicks off a week of book talks and special events across the city and at Cal State Long Beach.

The Freedom Writers Diary is a collection of stories by a group of teens that many had written off as unteachable. “Calling themselves the ‘Freedom Writers’ in homage to the civil rights activists, the ‘Freedom Riders,’ these students wrote candidly about growing up in difficult times and overcoming huge obstacles,” said Rich Archbold and Diane Jacobus, co-chairs of Long Beach Reads One Book. Read some passages from their diary here.
