National Book Awards

Seattle writer Timothy Egan wins the nonfiction prize for The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl. The other winners are: Richard Powers (fiction) for The Echo Maker; Santa Cruz writer Nathaniel Mackey (poetry) for Splay Anthem; and M.T. Anderson (children’s literature) for The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Vol. 1: The Pox Party.
