Department of good works

San Francisco novelist Dave Eggers, founder of the 826 Valencia writing center for children and the McSweeney’s publishing house, has received a $250,000 Heinz Award for his work. “These recipients are an inspiration to anyone looking for proof that we as a people still have the capacity to work and invent and create our way past the great challenges of our times,” says Teresa Heinz Kerry, chairman of the Heinz Family Foundation.
