Los Angeles author J. Michael Walker responds to yesterday’s post with his own suggestion.
He says: “Going to Extremes by Joe McGinniss, around late 1980’s I suppose, would have to be a fairly irreplaceable book on outer Alaska, too.
“Parts of it —
swallowing whiskey? vodka? and stepping outside in sub-zero weather and freezing to death from the inside out;
a man having his eyesight ripped out by a bear
and then feeling he had to live in the lower 48 because
living in Alaska and not being able to see it
would be just too unbearable –
have stayed with me,
and bubbled up to the surface of memory
from time to time,
since I read the book 2 decades ago.
and few books have done that….”
Thanks, J.Michael.
