Closing

CaliforniaAuthors is hearing today that the Los Angeles Times may soon close its book publishing division.

The Times newsroom has been abuzz in recent days with talk of impending layoffs by the Tribune Co., spurred by what an LaObserved report called “Chicago’s corporate dissatisfaction with profits and with resistance in Los Angeles to calls for deeper cost–cutting.”

The clash of cultures between the Times and its Chicago–based corporate owners has simmered since Tribune bought the Times Mirror Co. in 2000 and the undernourished book division was a ready target.

Los Angeles Times Books publishes a handful of books each year, including How Far Can a Piano Fly? and Other Tales from Column One, Desert Realty, Iconic LA, and Reflections, a collection by columnist Al Martinez.
