Some (really) good bookstore news for a change

The Book Standard reports that 115 new independent bookstores opened in the U.S. in 2007 — seventeen of them here in California. California even led the country in bookstore openings, while New York claimed the No. 2 spot with eight new stores. Bookselling This Week has compiled a complete list here.

Dutton’s lives on!

The LAT reports that billionaire Charles T. Munger has scrapped his plans for luxury condos on San Vicente Boulevard. Instead, he is building a two-story retail complex that would retain Dutton’s Brentwood Books in a new and improved space.
